Jones Excels, But Athletics Win | The rain came, as predicted, but the Kansas City Athletics and New York Black Yankees were able to complete their ballgame.
Despite a great performance by New York third baseman Chipper Jones, the Kansas City Athletics defeated the Black Yankees by the score of 12-7 at Yankee Stadium I. Jones was 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Steve Cooke came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The left-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. His record now stands at 2-1.
Kansas City used the timely hitting of Brent Mayne to seize the win. The designated hitter stroked a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Athletics on top, 10-7. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"I just tried to make good contact," said Mayne.
The Athletics go to 57-85 with the win. | | | | |
